THE INUIT DIDN'T DO IT

By Suzanne Rosenblatt, 2005

It's not idle chatter, there's something the matter
When Inuit milk, Inuit milk, is undrinkable
The ocean is vast, yet the garbage we cast
Seems to be unsinkable
North south east west, PCB's in the breast
With implications unthinkable
The Inuit didn't do it, Inuit didn't do it
Any clues? Can you intuit, can you intuit
Who it, who it, is who threw it?
We'll study the issue, and issue a study.
I'd say the issue is too many studies, and too little doing
We're studying studying studying dying
Studying studying studying dying
Studying the dying of earth.

A crack runs through the middle of the shelf
A crack runs through the middle of the shelf
The Arctic ice has started to melt
What will happen to land?
The Ward Hunt Ice Shelf's fractured
Have you heard? Have you heard?
And the Larson B has shattered
Into thousands of bergs.
The Arctic is the planet's, canary in the mine
Snap fracture shatter, a warning sign
Canary, canary, in the mine
Be wary, be wary, canary dying
Warming speeding up
Seasons heating up
Water levels rise, we'll say our goodbyes
To islands, coastal cities, to Lagos, to Shanghai.
Then we'll study the issue, and issue a study.
Or shall we take issue with so many studies, and so little doing?
We're studying studying studying dying
Studying studying studying dying
Studying the dying of earth.

The ozone hole grows
We get cancer on the nose
Our food is laced with pesticide
In the oceans, fish have died
The Aral Sea's already dead
Our drinking water's full of lead
Toxic water table, Permafrost unstable
Frequent forest fires, coral reefs bleached
More extreme storms, more whales and dolphins beached
We'll study the issue, and issue a study.
I'd say the issue is too many studies, and too little doing
We're studying studying studying dying
Stud deeing dying deeing dying
Ding do ng swan song deeing dying
Studying the dying of earth.

Fossil fuels
Make us facile tools
Of oil men
We're foiled again
If we buy
Their lies
Buy their SUV's
Let them poison seas
Ravage resources
Lead our armed forces
Make war at whim
Ignore the potential
Of sun, waves, wind
For energy that's renewable
Not profitable, just doable
They'd rather muddy the issue, and issue a study.
I'd say the issue is too many studies, and too little doing
We're studying studying studying dying
Stud deeing dying deeing dying, ding do ng ding do ng
Ding do ng bell, pussy's in the well
Fat cats put her in, isn't that a sin?
They won't take her out, they like being stout
The canary gets the shaft
The devil gets to laugh
As he's studying studying studying dying
Studying the dying of earth.

No more humans, No more fuming
No more war, No more gore
No more greed, No more need
No more corporations, No more third world nations
No more exploitation, Only radiation
No more fuss and trouble, Only dust and rubble
No more greenery, no more scenery
No more oil, no more gas
Just water and wasteland, and it's happening fast
We'll study the issue, and issue a study.
Or shall we take issue with so many studies, and so little doing?
We're studying dying, Doing deeing dying
Stud deeing dying, Doing deeing dying
Are you sleeping, are you lying?
Are you creeping, are you crying?
Doing deeing dying
Ding do ng done
