    EACH GENERATION ADVANCING

Just when middle age was the great beyond
you wake up in the face of it.

Those younger than you filter into coffee shops
    and onto roadways,
    their numbers increasing,
    putting you in your place.

    Somehow your peers have adapted.
They smile as they march past the grocery
and summer slips into the ends of their hair.
